The Forgotten Ones

At a veterans’ get-together

Husbands and wives sit together

Drinking cocktails, sipping champagne

One by one, the vets all stand

Say their names, where they’re from

Where they served and in which campaigns

As each man speaks his piece

The group applauds, the ritual repeats

…their wives sit, unacknowledged—such a shame!

The vet in front of me stands, then the next skips over me

Demanding my turn, I leap up and say,

“Ladies for all your years of military life—

I thank you for your service. I’m glad you came”

Finally…the group applauds
